Tieguanyin, a variety of Oolong tea, is one of the top ten famous teas in China. In 2010, it officially debuted at the Expo, becoming the first tea brand to be featured at the event. The tea's orchid aroma and mellow, thick taste are the result of its brewing process.
Belonging to the semi-fermented tea class, Tieguanyin lies between green tea and black tea. It possesses a unique "Guanyin charm" – a fragrance and elegant appeal that has been described as "seven bubbles lingering incense brook moon dew full of joy ridge cloud Tao." Tieguanyin is considered the best oolong tea, and its quality characteristics are distinct: the tea bar is curly, plump, and round, heavy and uniform, with a sand green color and an overall shape reminiscent of a dragonfly's head, spirulina, and frog's leg.
The brewed tea has a yellow and bright amber color, with a natural orchid fragrance and a mellow, sweet taste that lingers with a "Gan long" (a pleasant aftertaste). Tieguanyin is known for its high and lasting fragrance, which has been likened to "seven bubbles with lingering fragrance."
The Tieguanyin tea plant is delicate in nature, and its production is not extensive, leading to the saying "good to drink is not good to grow." As a result, Tieguanyin tea is more expensive. The pure Tieguanyin plant is a shrub-type tea, with a spreading tree, oblique branches, and horizontal leaves.
The leaves are elliptical in shape, with sparse and blunt teeth along the edges. The leaf surface is wavy and bulging, with a distinct rib pattern and a slight backward roll. The mesophylls are thick, green, and glossy, with a slightly dull leaf base and a slightly concave, tilted, and drooping leaf tip. The tender buds are purple, earning the tea the description "red bud crooked tail peach," which is one of the characteristics of the pure Tieguanyin breed.
